The Midnight Metamorphosis: A Color-Changing Butterfly-Pea Flower Cocktail

Image
A color-changing butterfly-pea flower cocktail that transforms from blue to violet and pink. This cocktail is inspired by a midnight potion that changes color when a magical ingredient is added — and the transformation happens right at the table, in front of your guests. The Concept The secret is butterfly-pea flower tea, a naturally blue infusion made from the flowers of Clitoria ternatea. When an acidic ingredient such as lemon juice is introduced, the blue color can shift toward violet or pink. Instead of simply mixing everything together, this recipe turns the color change into part of the serving experience. Guests watch the drink transform as the citrus mixture is poured into the glass. What Makes It Special Butterfly-pea flowers contain natural pigments called anthocyanins. These pigments change their molecular structure in response to acidity, affecting the wavelengths of light they absorb and the colors we see. Adding lemon juice lowers the pH of the drink and can shift th...

Boos and Booze at McClellan's Retreat: A Clue-Themed Halloween Party in Dupont Circle

Image
Was it Colonel Mustard, in the library, with the candlestick? On Saturday, October 31, McClellan's Retreat turns that question into a party. The cozy Dupont Circle cocktail bar's annual Halloween bash returns as "McCLUEllan's Boos & Booze" — a Clue-themed night of unlimited drinks, snacks, and a costume contest, from 8 p.m. to midnight, for $85 per person. The Party: A Murder Mystery You Drink Through McClellan's Retreat, at 2031 Florida Ave NW, is a small, Civil War–inspired cocktail bar just off Dupont Circle — all dark wood and low light, which makes it a natural mansion stand-in. The party is built around Clue, the 1985 cult-classic murder mystery film, and it is an annual tradition for the bar rather than a one-off theme. What the $85 Ticket Includes Unlimited Drinks and Snacks One ticket covers unlimited drinks and snacks for the full four hours, 8 p.m. to midnight. One fine-print note from the bar: the unlimited pours exclude the General...

Haunted Circus at Chicken + Whiskey: The 14th Street Whiskey Bar's Halloween Pop-Up

Image
Behind a Peruvian chicken counter on 14th Street hides one of DC's best Halloween rooms this year. The whiskey bar tucked in the back of Chicken + Whiskey has been transformed into the Haunted Circus — a month-long Halloween pop-up of terrifying clowns and themed drinks, running through November 1, with a free costume party on Halloween night, Saturday, October 31. The Setup: Dinner Up Front, Circus in the Back Chicken + Whiskey, at 1738 14th St NW, works in two acts. The front is a Peruvian rotisserie chicken restaurant; walk through it and you reach the hidden whiskey bar in the back. For spooky season, that back bar has gone full big top — haunted circus décor, creepy clown figures, and a seasonal drink list built for the theme. It is the rare Halloween night that can start as a casual dinner and turn into a party without changing addresses. What Happens During the Run Themed Drinks and Haunted Décor The pop-up runs through Sunday, November 1, so Halloween itself is the p...

The World's Largest Pumpkin: The Record Just Smashed Through 3,000 Pounds

Image
The world's largest fruit is not a berry or a melon. It is a pumpkin — and its record has become the fastest-moving target in gardening. In October 2023, Travis Gienger's Atlantic Giant weighed in at 1,246.9 kilograms (2,749 pounds) and took the world record. It looked untouchable. It has been beaten three times since, and this month the record smashed through a barrier growers had chased for decades: 3,000 pounds. A Pumpkin Named Michael Jordan Gienger, a horticulture instructor from Minnesota, named his record pumpkin "Michael Jordan" because in its early weeks it was shaped like a basketball. Weighed at the Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off in Half Moon Bay, California, on October 9, 2023, it measured 642.6 centimetres (21 feet 1 inch) around and outweighed a small car. Its story did not end at the scale. The following month, carver Eric Jones transformed it into the heaviest jack o'lantern ever made, decorated with military motifs in honour of V...

Mummy Wellington: Halloween's Most Impressive Main Course

Image
Beef Wellington is already dinner-party royalty. Wrap it in crisscrossed pastry bandages, give it olive eyes, and it becomes the centerpiece of Halloween — a mummy that reveals perfect pink beef when carved. Why Wellington Works for Halloween Built for Drama  Wellington is designed for the reveal: the first cut exposes the pink center against the mushroom duxelles and golden pastry. On Halloween, that reveal becomes theater — the mummy gives up its secret. The Bandage Technique Instead of wrapping the beef in one sheet of puff pastry, cut the pastry into strips and lay them across the beef at angles, leaving small gaps. The gaps read as bandage separations, and two black olives pressed in near one end become the eyes. Mummy Wellington: The Recipe Ingredients (serves 4) 800 g beef tenderloin, trimmed and tied 400 g mushrooms, finely minced 2 shallots, minced; 2 garlic cloves, minced 2 tbsp butter, plus thyme sprigs 6 slices prosciutto 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed 1 eg...

Ghost in the Fog: The Ethereal White Halloween Cocktail

Image
Not every Halloween drink should scream. Ghost in the Fog is the quiet one at the party — a pale, silky coconut-lychee cocktail that materializes out of fog with an eyeball staring back at you from the rim. The Pale Side of Halloween Why White Works After black cauldrons and blood-red coupes, a ghostly white drink is a visual palate cleanser. Coconut cream gives it body and an otherworldly opacity; lychee adds a floral sweetness that keeps it from feeling heavy. The Eyeball Garnish A canned lychee stuffed with a blueberry is the most convincing edible eyeball in the business — no sculpting required. Skewer it on a cocktail pick and rest it on the rim, staring outward. Ghost in the Fog: The Recipe Ingredients (serves 1) 50 ml white rum (or gin for a drier version) 30 ml coconut cream 30 ml lychee juice (from the can) 15 ml fresh lime juice 10 ml simple syrup (optional, to taste) 1 canned lychee + 1 blueberry, for the eyeball Small piece of dry ice (optional, for fog) Me...

Nightmare in Navy Yard 2026: DC's Biggest Halloween Party Takes Over Supplyhouse

Image
Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, and DC's biggest Halloween party is built for it. The seventh annual Nightmare in Navy Yard, presented by Scorpio Entertainment, takes over Supplyhouse in Navy Yard on Saturday, October 31, from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. — three dance floors, more than 50 animatronics, food trucks, and a five-hour open bar. The Venue: A Former Navy Building Supplyhouse stands at 200 Tingey St SE in Navy Yard, in the U.S. Navy's former Building 170. It is one of DC's newest large event spaces, and this year it becomes the party's new home. Organizer Edward Daniels of Scorpio Entertainment calls the event a "one-stop shop" for Halloween, and expects around 1,000 guests. What Is Inside Three Dance Floors, Three DJs Three dance floors run through the night with three DJs, fog, and laser shows. Each floor has its own energy, so the night can move from main-stage spectacle to darker corners without ever leaving the building. 50+ Animatronics ...
