Introduction

Welcome to The Culinary Orbit!

I'm Anastasius, a food writer based in Hyattsville, Maryland, and this blog is my orbit around the world's great dishes — the stories behind them, the drinks that travel with them, and the science that explains why they work.

Everything here is organized into four orbits:

Fine Dining Atlas — Legendary dishes and the people who made them: the last meals of presidents, royal cuisines, century-old restaurants, and the world's rarest ingredients, from Serbia's $1,300-a-kilo donkey-milk cheese to France's forbidden ortolan.

The Drink Lab — Cocktails with a past: lost recipes from the golden age of bartending, clarified milk punch from a 1763 Benjamin Franklin letter, and the drinks being invented right now.

Kitchen & Food Science — The how and why of cooking: the Maillard reaction, the right way to choose a cutting board, buyer's guides for the tools I actually research, and the food myths that turn out to be wrong.

DMV Table — My home turf: restaurant openings, food festivals, and dining events across Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia, covered as they happen.

I research every story against primary and reputable sources, and when a popular food legend turns out to be false, I say so — that fact-checking habit is the whole point of my Culinary Mythbusters series.

Thanks for stopping by. If a story here sends you to a restaurant, a recipe, or a rabbit hole of your own, it has done its job.
