National Taco Day 2026

Why It's on a Tuesday Now (and Where to Get Free Tacos)

Today, Tuesday, October 6, 2026, is National Taco Day — and for the first time in a way that feels intentional, it lands on a Taco Tuesday. That's no coincidence. The date itself was engineered by Taco Bell, which successfully lobbied to move the holiday off its old October 4 slot and onto the first Tuesday of October. Here's the full story, plus every free taco deal you can still grab today.

The Calendar Heist: How Taco Day Became a Tuesday

National Taco Day used to fall on October 4 every year. Then in 2024, Taco Bell partnered with the National Day Calendar to relocate it to the first Tuesday of October — permanently fusing it with the beloved Taco Tuesday tradition.

The move was the second act of a bigger drama. In 2023, Taco Bell waged (and won) a highly public campaign to free the phrase "Taco Tuesday" from the trademark that Taco John's had held for over three decades. Trademark liberated, calendar rewritten — Taco Day is now, forever, a Tuesday.

2026: Taco Bell × Duolingo Take It Global

This year, Taco Bell teamed up with Duolingo to turn Taco Day into a worldwide celebration:

  • Fun fact the brands are pushing: the word "taco" is understood as-is in more than 30 languages, including Spanish, French, and German.
